Brazilian jiujitsu has been tested and proven as the absolute best self defense method around. It’s also incredibly fun! Come give it a try in San Leandro. We’re very excited to offer Brazilian jiujitsu as part of our program here at 510 Judo.

Brazilian jiujitsu is a martial art and self defense system that emphasizes ground control and submissions. It shares a common root with judo and has many similarities – the uniform is the same, the belt system is closely related, many of the techniques overlap.

Where jiujitsu differs is in its emphasis on ground control. Jiujitsu focuses mostly on what happens after the fight gets to the ground – finishing techniques that can make the opponent give up or pass out. In terms of day to day practice, jiujitsu focuses roughly 80/20 on ground techniques vs takedowns and whereas in judo it’s the opposite, about 80/20 on throws and takedowns vs ground control. Of course this is a generalization – individual schools and teachers have their own focus.
