On Saturday, March 20th, our friends at Catch MMA hosted a friendly no gi jiujitsu team tournament for white belts. Competing for 510 Judo were Sebastian, Maxim, Tristan and Sean. The rules:

  • submission only – no points, no advantages
  • 8 minute matches
  • 4 man teams with a total team weight of less than 700 pounds
  • If you win a match you stay in to fight the next guy on the other team
  • If neither competitor gets a submission both are eliminated and two fresh players come in from each team
  • It continues this way until one team runs out of players

This was a great introduction to competition for our white belts. Although we didn’t win as a team, we did get a few submissions along the way, and everyone got at least two matches. It was a ton of fun and overall a great experience. Thank you to the Catch MMA coaches Omar Kasdi, Zach Costa and Jeff Bott for putting this event on, and thanks to Carlson Gracie Alameda coach Diogo Gomes for reffing the matches. Watch Catch MMA’s instagram page, I’m sure they’ll have videos up soon.

Our focus at 510 Judo is judo, of course, but we also train jiujitsu as part of the Catch MMA/Rio Combat/Carlson Gracie family. Judo and jiujitsu complement each other very well – really in my opinion they are the same art with two different rulesets for competition. Judo emphasizes throws and takedowns but also includes pins, chokes and armbars. Jiujitsu emphasizes submissions but also includes takedowns. In the past we’ve also had wrestling classes and at some point we’ll bring those back as well.
