This Sunday we are having our very first in house tournament, right here in the dojo. This tournament is open only to Oakland Judo students, and is intended to be a fun, friendly competitive experience for people of all ages, sizes, and ability levels. If you’ve never competed before, don’t worry! We will explain all the rules and match you up with an appropriate partner.
Divisions will be made for kids and adults in both the traditional judogi and in the “no-gi” category. In all categories, leg grabs will be allowed! Back in 2010 any gripping below the waist during the throwing portion of a bout (aka tachi waza, or while both players are on their feet) was banned by the International Judo Federation, which has significantly reshaped modern competitive judo. However, throws that involve grabbing the legs and the associated counters are still an important part of judo, and it’s our pleasure to offer a venue where these throws are acceptable.
Weigh-ins start at 9, and we will get started at about 10. I’m guessing we’ll be all done by noon or 1 p.m. Cost is just $5 if you register online (do it now!) and $10 cash if you register the day of. We have some nice ribbons to give out for first, second, and third place finishers.
