O Soto Gari (Major Outer Reap) is our technique of the week. O Soto Gari is a mechanically simple throw which, in classical form, does not involve any turning or twisting to finish. That’s why O Soto Gari is often taught to beginners. However, this does not mean it’s easy to do!

The basic practice is done as shown in the Kodokan video above: two partners standing in square stance (shizen hontai), one step entry with kuzushi generated by the action of the hands, and a big swing of the leg to finish.

USA Judo is the governing body for judo in the United States. 510 Judo is an official USA Judo club. All competitors and everyone with rank of ikkyu (brown belt adults, purple belt juniors) or above are required to join and maintain their USA Judo membership. However, anyone can join, and if you do you will get access to this huge video library, worth the price of admission alone, in my opinion. You won’t find this stuff on youtube.
