Here’s a very nice setup for three different throws from an outside lapel grip: O Uchi Gari, Ippon Seoinage, and Koshi Guruma. With all these throws we use our left hand (assuming a right vs right situation – it can be done either way) to grip uke’s lapel rather than sleeve. This lapel grip becomes your hikite (pulling hand) and your right hand stays free until the last moment.
I learned this throw several years ago from a Kayla Harrison video on Superstar Judo. Superstar Judo is a subscription site based in the U.K. that features instructionals from judo superstars of the past and present. I would recommend it to anyone who is at brown belt and above. It’s difficult to learn basics from a video, but once you’re at brown belt you should be able to pick up on the techniques presented on video learning sites – the same goes for Judo Fanatics.
